Young People and Families: Our experience

The medical specialties we have worked in within the NHS include liver disease and transplant, kidney disease and transplant, cystic fibrosis, urology, orthopaedics, cardiology, neurology, cleft lip and palate, audiology, cochlear implant, feeding difficulties, gender identity and general paediatrics.

We have worked across both paediatric and adult services, and in both inpatient and outpatient settings. An area of specialism for both of us is in young people transitioning from paediatric to adult services.

Both of us have held senior leadership roles in NHS services within these areas, with the aim of integrating psychological thinking into families’ experience of services. We have worked extensively with individuals and families, as well as facilitating workshops, groups and setting up a peer mentoring programme for young people. We have published research in peer-reviewed journals, and presented at national and international conferences.

We have always worked closely with our medical, nursing and therapy colleagues, as well as with education and other agencies outside of Health.

Therapeutic Approaches

We have doctoral-level training in a range of psychological therapies, and continue to develop our skills through ongoing training. Having this range of expertise helps us to adapt our approach to your specific needs and preferences.

These approaches include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

  • Narrative therapy

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)

  • Family therapy

  • Coaching Psychology

  • Mentalisation based therapy for adolescents (MBT-A)

  • Rewind treatment for PTSD

Currently all of our sessions are done remotely with people, using zoom.

Some people are immediately keen on remote working, whilst others are more cautious. In our experience remote sessions work incredibly well.

If you are unsure about this then please do contact us to talk it through.
